Context of Practice Introductory Seminar

At the beginning of the seminar we talked through a few of the answers people had written in response to the set work from our last C.O.P. seminar. This was to create a list of five designs that had influenced us. Follow the URL below to see my response.

Richard showed us some of his influences, including Experimental Jetset, a series of rebellious posters made by french art students in 1968, the album cover for The Clash, London Calling and a small taste of some political cartoons often in the Guardian. I found it very interesting that nearly all of his examples were graphic design where as a number of those provided by the students were not. Possibly shining a light on the way inspiration flows from one medium to another.

We then started to look at and analyse some designs starting with this years Leeds College of Art prospectus. We have been asked to come up with five features of this design that are successful or unsuccessful with a rational for each. Once I have completed this a URL will be placed below these images.

We were also given two images, one a poster add for and "Uncle Sam Range" cooker, the other a first world war propaganda poster to aid conscription. For homework we were asked to write up a 500 word comparison looking at the organisation of font and style of illustration, the purpose and meaning of the image, the target audience and the social and historical contexts relevant to the production of the image. Once I have done this I will add a URL to it underneath the images below.
