Studio Brief 01 Briefing OUGD403

Today we were given our first individual brief; Alphabet soup. The details of which are shown below.

The word I was given was "Damage" and the font Helvetica. So I started out by making a mind map trying to get down what I felt the concept of Damage could be broken down into. The image below show this.
As a table we also handed around the sheets of paper with our fount and word on so that they could write down an associated word, to help each individual with their direction of thought and research.  The words I received are shown below.

I found these really useful and so far it has sent me down the path of looking at Helvetica as  quite a mess of associations because of how often it is used, but also very ambiguous in personality because of the way it is almost a transparent type face in that the meaning of the words is what grabs attention rather than the individual letter forms.

Also the idea of repair being associated with the word damage had not occurred to me, so this could easily develop into one of my ten letter forms in a way I could not have predicted. Another promising path to follow is the concept that the damage may not be done to the letter forms but by the letter forms to the reader. For example Baskerville was originally believed to be assaulting to to the eye because of its high line width contrast. This could be an area I play around with along with any others which jar and distract the eye.

From here my next move is to research both the origin and uses of Helvetica and see if this might lead to any refinement of idea. I also intend to ask a number of people what words they associate with the word damage and look it up in a thesaurus.
