Studio brief 04 research into International Renewable Energy Resources OUGD403

The International Renewable Energy Agency has created an online resource that analyses each countries potential for all types of renewable energy. Above is an image that shows the wind strength around the UK compared to parts of west europe. The red and pink zone are those with the highest wind speed. It is clear that we could benefit hugely from more off shore wind farms.

The Company that created this resource are devoted to being supportive and promotional of renewable energy on an international scale. Its visual identity is, not surprisingly, very neutral. Its colour scheme revolves around blue and grey, calm and neutral colours. The type used is simple, clean cut and practical, by doing this they have created the impression of an erudite conglomerate being that has clear cut goals and plans to benefit everyone. The logo shown above manages not only to communicate unity in the way that it seems two halves of the world are linked but also the fact that their aims are to achieve the longevity of the human race.

Once again the simplistic and assertive identity is carried through managing to cnvey the agency's political power in one sweep in the map pictured above.

This shows the actual atlas that depicts renewable energy potential.
They have used colour coding throughout their map systems to show where wind speed is highest ect. The visual effect of this is to make it look like infer red film, which in turn has connotations of combat and serious modern battle. This lends the experience of using the atlas a sense of seriousness which fits with the applications the information this tool is providing. It is also making use of long held connotations and assumptions connected to colours. For example, the fact that red means heat or a large amount of something. The simple nature of these assumed connotations, absorbed from social interaction, fits with the ethos of the agency, working together for the common good.
