Context of Practice Lecture OUGD401 Illustration at Work

Illustration is a strategic image making used within the context of visual communication to convey a meaning or concept. Concept without context is not illustration and vice versa.

The aesthetic of an image, the medium and look of the drawing style, is as important in communication as the symbol or image its self. Illustration requires a tone of voice which defines the style of the artist and compliments what needs to be communicated. THe use of these aspects allow the image to convey a greater depth of meaning which evokes an emotional reaction. The quality of an illustration can be told from the emotions evoked by it.
For example, The sleek crisp edges of this illustration exactly fits with the sleek, sexy and cutting edge look of Vogue, for which this illustration was created.

This is the cover of a children's nook and the colourful busy aesthetic relates to this in order to communicate effectively with its specific audience.
