Studio Brief 02 Type Research OUGD403

Before starting the creation of the full digital font that conveys the idea of damage I thought it may be productive to look into how other people might have represented damage in type form. The most obvious portrayals are shown below where the type has simple been battered and obscured.

Some of the most interesting work was slightly more complex. the image below for example takes massive parts of the letter forms away depending on the context of the letters within words to create legibility. This delicate and informed representation of the concept of 'damage' is more a kin to what I wish to achieve in this project.

In the previous brief a large influence on the final designs was the idea that letters could damage the eye of the reader, a reaction to the typeface Baskerville when it was first designed. this is the main theme and concept which I wish to achieve in this brief.

Another area from brief 01 that might play a relatively large role in the product of brief 02 is the idea of optical illusions and how these might damage the eye. Now the format is digital more delicate and exact visuals can be made, making optical illusions possible.

The area of damaged and deconstructed type is something I have been interested in for a while, follow the link to look at my Pinterest that contains many images that have influenced me on this subject.
