This lecture was more of an extended briefing on the practical aspect of this module now that we have finished our essay. The majority was spent outlining ways to make a clear connection between the written and practical parts of the module. The best way seems to be to treat the design work in a similar way to the essay. Isolating issues found in the essay and attempting to understand them in greater depth through the design process, as you would when writing an essay. The important thing is not to produce work tat simply explains the essay or reiterates what has been said, take it further, possibly by considering the context of the present day. Analysing the work that you produce is vitally important because it allows you another chance to reason through all theories and influences and how effectively they are communicated. Informed engagement is what is required. Targeting and isolation of a specific audience is important to fully evaluate the effectiveness of the work and therefore help to create more effective work. There are several areas of research that can be a motivation or help in this brief.
research behind design- theories and other designs that inform you design work
research in from of the design- the audience or where the design will contextually sit.
research for...- production.
research through- the process of creative practice acts as a sort of research into your own personal practice and how to improve it.
this should all come together to create a process of continuous learning, reflection and awareness of the whole process. Not only should your essay and practical work for this beef inform each other but hopefully it will inform and inspire the rest of you personal practice.
For my own personal work, which surrounds the arts and crafts movement, I want to look into the respect for the crafts man and the creative that arguably is being lost in contemporary creative industries. However, I am unsure how to go about doing this so I will talk to one of the graphics tutors who is very interested in the arts and crafts movement and see if the conversation sparks any ideas. The development from citing the work ethic of the arts and crafts in my essay to applying it to modern day graphics is a nice development of a point but I will also go back and read the essay to see if anything else jumps out at me.
