Although I had very little to show for the crit. I did manage to talk about my plan for the video that would be the submission piece for this module. It was quite well received and some very useful feedback was given. Most specifically it was pointed out that because of the complexity of the theory aspect of my work it might be worth writing out a rationale for the links between the theory and the practical because the subtleties may be lost on some. However, I did go some way to solving this by suggesting that the section of lettering be the words: the old id the new waiting to happen, which outlines the basics of my essay conclusion. Another suggestion was made to maybe mix the bone calligraphy with some other method of lettering to add another angle to the development. We also discuss other types of outcome because creating a video may not be doable in the time. A font book was suggested in which the letterforms were examined and explained in origin was something which particularly caught my imagination. I will bear this with an open mind and see how the lettering develops and t whether this suggests a particular way forward.
I then went on to create a pinterest board of gothic and calligraphic lettering to emulate and learn from. One such sample that I have used a lot for this is shown below.
To start with many problems were encountered and a generally un satisfactory appearance achieved.
I had particular problems with the D in this style and went on to try and refine it.
Exploring further into the other designs on the pinterest board I found some embellishments that suggested a different development of the lettering.
I explored embellishments and the double stroke favoured in some styles and shown specifically in the T below.
A point of great difficulty is the width and balance of each letter in relation to the next and I think I will go on to grid up each letter and experiment with what looks most balanced.
