This module has been particularly challenging. I chose a subject matter for my essay which was complex and often confusing. It took a long time to get to grips with the material and, to be honest I still feel that there are areas that I have, for the sake of the word count, left unexplored. Jameson's writing and its evasive nature was enough of a problem, causing me to constantly second guess my own points 70% of the time. However, eventually I found that my essay organically shaped its self out of my own interest in the theory.
I had a lot more success when it came to my wider reading this year. I started the bibliography from very early on and it proved one of the most useful things I could have done. It allowed me to go back to very obscure sources that, although may not have made it into the essay, really helped develop my thoughts on the subject. I had a few concerns about going over the word limit, because waffling is something I constantly have to battle against when writing, but with the suggestions from tutorials I managed to cut it down considerably.
When it comes to the practical aspect of this module, I couldn't have had more fun doing it and I think this contributed to the volume of work I managed to get done in a short amount of time. I set out with a degree of uncertainty about what I would discover and where my experimentation would lead. However, this played to my advantage, because when I stumbled across calligraffiti, I was more than ready to give it a go. More than anything else I take away from this project it is the skills of lettering and an eye for the details of letter forms. I really learned something useful through this project. The one thing that I would change is also one of my favourite things about the project. I would have liked to plan the filming and video creation more closely, this was difficult because I was filming the actual experimentation as it happened and I was uncertain where it would go. It would have saved me some stress to have done the development and then planned and constructed the video. However, I also think this would have detracted from the reality of the process conveyed and the great summative evaluation that came from editing the raw process to create the videos.
All in all, the grade aside, I have struggled with, but really enjoyed this module.
