OUGD403 Studio Brief 03 Typographic Decisions

The fonts below have been selected because of their functional look, variations in ascenders and descenders and spacing. All of this relating to the research results that isolated the defining aspects of cities as functional, confined and social.
(Antique Olive Std Roman)- Once again a functional tone is achieved through the use of both soft curves and angular shapes. The short ascenders make this font perfect for experimentation with line width and alignment in body text.

(ITC Avant Garde Gothic Std Book)- The large counters and kerning give the type face a sense of spacial awareness. Especially the lower case letter width variation make them look as if they are pushing and squishing each other for more space, much like the architecture and people in a city environment.Once again a functional tone is achieved through the use of both soft curves and angular shapes. The short ascenders make this font perfect for experimentation with line width and alignment in body text.

(Avenir Std 45 Book)- The slightly thinner and more delicate letter forms in this font give the space around them a certain presence as if it were pushing in from either side, again reminiscent of city living.

(Briem Akademi Std Regular)- The way these letters seem created from many different shapes, looks very much like the architectural sketches that formed a part in the early research for this project.

(Univers Std 63 Bold Extended)-The functional appearance and heavy line weight make this a typeface that allows a certain amount of manipulation while legibility is maintained. Once again the short ascenders allow changes in spacing an body text.
