Today we had a crit discussing the questions we wanted to address in our essays and how we will go about doing so. The question I introduced was:
How relevant is Jameson's theory of pastiche to modern typographic practice?
I want to make the focus two fold; between the type designs that I will analyse and evaluate and the creative practice involved in creating these designs. This is because the quintessential role that the designers intentions play in the use of pastiche in any format.
I will take several modern examples of typographic design, differing greatly in appearance and affect and relate them to Jameson's theory to discuss the ways the designs support and disprove it with strong reference to the social context of the pieces and the marxist theories that Jameson was communicating.
