OUGD601 Context of Practice 03 Allocating Theorists and Planning First Chapter

As detailed in the last post I am basing my first chapter in the deep theoretical analysis of alienation in all the forms also previously mentioned. (physical, social, emotional and temporal). I started with physical alienation and Marx. By searching through readings of his work like An Introduction to Marx's Theory of Alienation by Judy Cox I found the most relevant and influential texts written by Marx. In this Case Capital and his Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844. I then skim read these to find the most useful quotes surrounding the ideas of physical alienation. I colour coded all my notes so that my reflections on these points are always green and the original source quote are always deep blue.

I then created a thematical progression plan of all of his ideas as they could address physical alienation and its causes.

I then returned to readings of Marx's work such as Marxism and Modernism by Ernest Lunn and three others shown in the bibliography below.

I carefully reaffirmed my own reading of Marx through these writers. Using the progression plan I made earlier to choose quotes that would help reinforce the point I was intending to make. I also made sure I had at least one source which challenged at least a little either my reading of Marx or the ideas he expresses so that so deeper analysis and consideration of the points could be facilitated.

I repeated this process with Debord...

and Baudrillard. The pink areas on the Bibliography are things I need to double check.

The fourth type of alienation I had identified was temporal. The theorist that Richard had suggested for this was Bourriand and relational aesthetics. Basically this boils down to The grown theme on the art scene to create work witch is the relationships between people, or uses actual social interaction as the focus. While this is most definitely relevant to what I am looking at I found it very difficult to relate directly to temporal alienation. It then occurred to me that Jameson, and the theory of Pastiche is perfect for demonstrating temporal alienation and even fits with the marxist theories that I have focused on so far. I have chosen to use marxist theories because of the way they relate back to the structure of society and even a solution to this alienation,  (except for possibly Baudrillard). So, I will return to my last years COP essay and see what I can structure from it.

Predominantly what I found was a quite confusing essay and some useful sources So, in an effort to not  confuse myself further I took the sources and nothing else and conducted a fresh examination. I found a great critical reading of Jameson and Pastiche by Linda Hutcheon which will definitely come back into play later in my essay because of its contextual relivance and the way it looks at the role of the artist and individual producer in Pastiche. I also found several seconary readings of The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism which came in handy in triangulation.
